Another good ground cover that stays fresh-looking is the perennial
geranium. They come in all shades of pink/purple and vary in height from a
few inches to a few feet tall. If you cut them back after the initial
spring flush, the foliage will regrow and stay green all summer.
I also like to use mums as a cover. When they bloom my roses have given up
for the year. Since the foliage of mums stay nice all summer, it's an
added bonus to see those blooms come fall. I am particularly fond of the
daisy types (single petalled).
