Philip:

Do rugosas sucker? That's like asking if they're carefree! The most
prolific sucker I have (oh, the double reference is delicious) is the ol'
'Therese Bugnet', which is actually now considered to be a real b*tch in my
garden. She's suckering out into everything, even coming up in places two
or three feet away from the main bush. I cut down all but about three of
these volunteers, and they are all growing back more vigorously than
before.

I've had this one about four or five years. She didn't start this prolific
business until last year. I'm guessing that the main bush is about 7 feet
tall or more and easily that wide. The oldest canes are broomstick-sized
in circumference. The bottom 1/3 of these canes have very wicked-looking
thorns, but the rest of it is pretty smooth. It's getting very difficult
to cut back all of the spent blooms, although I try to do this because I
can sometimes get repeat bloom by doing it. I started that about three
years ago.

The problem with it is that since I have all rugosas, I never know whether
a new cane is from 'Therese Bugnet' or another variety until it blooms.
And she has a habit of coming up in the middle of something I truly like
and am loathe to disturb.

Despite all of her faults, she is my favorite rose.
