Re: [Rose-list] Garden maps/pictures/journal'

Speaking of hosta, I measured two today. 'Sum and Substance' has leaves 14
inches across. 'Frances Williams' has a couple 13 inches wide. It's a great
year for hosta.

My roses are coming along, including three of four bareroot varieties
(floribunda and shrub) ordered from Jung Seed Co. in Wisconsin. The stems of
one was quite wrinkled and dark when it arrived two weeks ago; not a sign of
life though I planted it. The other new ones are leafed out nicely. So I
gotta get a new one.

Roses planted 2-3 years ago are looking great. Even my lone tea, 'Mr.
Lincoln,' looks fairly decent. When he gives up, there will be no teas in my
gardens. I just can't keep them more than a season or two.

I do take photos a couple times during the growing season, but not monthly.
Such a practice would help me use up film more quickly. My wife Pat gave me
a camera for Christmas; it has all the bells and whistles. I'll need a lot
of practice before I'm as comfortable as I am with my old camera. Of course,
with two cameras slung over my shoulder, I can really shoot pictures.

I got to thinking more about the map. It's a good idea, but I'll have to
rely on photos in books and catalogs to identify almost everything that's
missing a tag. I can recall the names of some, but not everything.

I think someone once said that the mind is the first thing to go, but I
can't remember for sure.

John A.
