Geesh, what a depressing thread. But it's something I've had happen to me,
too. And, as one writer pointed out, it just seems inconceivable that
_gardeners_, usually the most generous people on earth, would do such
things. But to really illustrate the problem, there's the theft problems
at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. I'm a hyper-active
volunteer there. I write gardening columns for the newsletter, co-chair
the Rare & Unusual Plant Sale, and assist in planning and planting.
Whenever we aquire a new specimen (and we've really been active recently),
it's necessary to actually CHAIN the plant to the ground, under the mulch.
That is, spikes are driven in around the plant, chains and locks are put in
place, and mulch is put over top. It became obvious that we needed to
resort to extreme measures when some a**hole stold an 8 foot tall
Stewartia. Yep, you read that right. Then Japanese Maples were yanked
out. The list goes on. And then some idiot drove across the lawn and
crushed 4 thirty year old Tree Peonies. Damned pathetic, really. I'm
actually inclined to think that it's someone in the business, who knows
what these plants are.
Oh, yes, to keep things on topic, I'm about to get my first rose bloom:
David Austin's 'Sweet Juliet'.
