Great observation...hadn't given that any thought. I'd guess then that only a
fan-shape would be plausible...do you think that would supply more blossoms,
but less than hortizontal? Sounds so lovely...and we do have plenty of roses
that are truly
hardy in Chicago. Winter damage from a poor snow cover and brutal winds would
probably be the key - if you lose a cane on an espalier, it's really obvious.
Wrapping
with straw may be the answer.
