I usually just mulch heavily with pine straw and I'm in zone 7.  That will
probably work for you too.

To tell the truth, I had fogotten all about the list.  I had to set a bunch
of my lists to nomail for the Fall Quarter and I guess I assumed that this
was one of them.  I'm sure the activity will pick up in the Spring.

BTW, I wanted my roses to go to hips this year so I could make rose hip tea,
but none have produced any yet.  The blooms just faded and fell off without
producing.  I don't think polination is a problem because we have tons of
bees and butterflies visiting the rose bed.  Could it be insufficient water?
We had a pretty dry summer and I wasn't able to water them very often due to
restriction on usage.
