Re: Hello

thanks for replying to me Directly I also belive that we all should get
to know one another I think it would be fun . here in Milwaukee we do
experience quite a lot of humidity in the summer and this summer was
aweful for roses to dry and then all the rain at once ( In ONE DAY !! we
had a big flood for here) I am ordering some hardy Callas from Brecks
they will not come till next spring I guess I should go and get my one
plant I got earlier this summer as a gift and get it out of the garden
before it dies. I do have qu8ite a variety of bulbs that I ordered but
the weather has been all wrong for planting too dry and hot then all of
sudden we got snow and a lot of cold so now it may be too late to plant
the ( 200 some ) bulbs I got ( they are a gift from my husband who is
sick of buying me annuals every year) I ordered the usual daffodils
tulips and crocuses and some more unusual ones like early snow drops
lavender mountain lillies and asiatic lillies and I have some white
tiger lillies now all I have to do is get them all in the ground I
cannot remember the names of most of the ones I ordered but by the time
they bloom next year I should be able to get pictures to you all ( I am
hoping that Santa will get me a photo scanner) thanks for the tip on
callas I should be able to get them out later this week we are having a
warm up

RO>To Sue in Milwaukee:

RO>I live right on zone 5/6 in Kentucky. I cannot get Calla lillies to
RO>overwinter outside; it's too cold here. Plant them out in the spring and
RO>dig them up for the winter.

RO>I grow a lot of things with my roses, and especially love lamb's ears and
RO>calamintha as an edging. I hope that you will put some of your bulbs in
RO>with your roses, as I grow oriental and asiatic lillies with mine. The
RO>flower forms and fragrances compliment each other. For more vertical
RO>accents, I also like campanulas which supply a nice blue that looks good
RO>with whatever roses you have. For a skirt around the feet of my roses, I
RO>find that the coreopsis verticulata or coreopsis rosea provides a rounder,
RO>softer feel. The soft yellow and pink lasts all season long for me.
RO>Another favorite combination I found out by accident was the monarda 'Blue
RO>Stocking', whose dark bluish-purple is absolutely smashing with my 'Blaze'
RO>that climbs up a fence.

RO>I am a novice, too, when compared to those on this list. Even though we
RO>are both classified as zone 5, I'm sure you don't have the awful humidity
RO>and drought that I experience, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
RO>You'll just have to experiment with what will work in your garden -- that's
RO>how I found out about what will and won't work for me.
