Re: Texture in the Rose Garden -Reply

In June, I like the blousy look of shrub roses with the big purple balls of
the larger alliums. I combine them with vertical spikes of foxgloves and
deep purple campanulas. Quite an appealing combination.

In mid-summer, I like using spikey lavender with the shrubs and nepeta at
the feet of the climbing roses. I've also combined oriental lilies and the
ghostly white of sea hollies with roses. You can't much beat the
architectural appeal of a sea holly. There's nothing else like them!

Right now, I have a row of roses against a chain link fence that have
stopped blooming for the year. At their feet I have placed large mums
which not only give me good fall color, but they are so large that they
have grown through the fence (which also provides nice support!). So I
have these large cushions of flowers and the stalks of the rose bushes are
coming through them.

Just a couple of thoughts. I like to arrange flowers and I look for things
that look as good in my garden as they would in a vase.
