Hi Joanie and others:
I have luck with roses planted in the fall. Simply plant them as directed
and make sure they have copious amounts of water to get them through the
winter. Don't fertilize. Remove dead or damaged stems before planting. After
the first hard freeze cover with a mound of dirt and leaves. In early April
I gradually remove the covering and joyfully greet the plants back for
another season.
This isn't loss-proof, but it works.
What don't work for me are the hybrid teas. I've tried and tried but can't
get them to last for me. Now I grow floribunda, rugosa and other shrub roses
that bloom almost non-stop spring through early autumn.
We've had a few nights with temps down to 35 degrees F. without any ill
affects. Sunday night it supposed to be freezing or below. It's after the
first hard freeze that I winterize my roses.
