Re: mildew et al


Actually, at least for Black Spot (not sure about mildew), you're
supposed to apply *before* every rain, since rain spreads the disease and
you want a barrier between the leaf and the fungus spores. Since it's
hard to always be there, then at least once a week, and more if it rains.
I find it a hassle and appreciate plants that are less susceptible to
disease, like many of the Austin English roses. Rugosas are supposed to
be pretty well disease free.

I don't know about the soap taking care of the insects but it might,
especially aphids if you spray right on the little nasties.
