Re: Re: good and bad roses, scent and repeat

Hi Joanie. I'm awful for not knowing what on earth is in my garden.
I tend to plant them and forget to keep good track of what's what. I
do love the scent of Therese Bugnet, as mentioned. William Baffin has
no scent to speak of. I have some roses I call my bulletproof roses
but they were "weeds" that came with the house that I transplanted and
got to thrive. They're old and tough, once bloomers in very double,
very light pink. The scent is intoxicating on those things. I can't
even tell you for sure what species they are, though. They spread by
runners, are very thorny, are taller than I am after just a few years
(I dug up a few runners and lined the drive with them) and cannot be
killed no matter how hard you try. They only bloom in June, but what
a show.

Speaking of which, why are people such snobs about once-blooming
roses? I was always the same way. If it didn't repeat, I wanted
nothing to do with it. Then one day I realized I went out of my way
to get lilacs for my yard because they are so beautiful and fragrant,
and those things bloom for a MUCH shorter time than your average
once-blooming rose. And the thing is, with my bulletproof roses they
are still worthy even when not covered with blooms since they make a
no-fuss green, dense bush to line the yard.

Back to fragrance though..... for hybrid teas I just love Tiffany and
Double Delight. I'm often disappointed by wimpy scents on HTs but
those two make me swoon.

Otherwise, I have no idea what I've got or what to recommend. Sorry!
:)
