Since you're in zone 8 I wouldn't cut them. What I do is around this
time of year I stop deadheading. This supposedly signals the plant
that it's time to get ready for fall. I also don't cut anything,
even leaves with blackspot because that will stimulate the plant.
When the bushes are dormant; then I go out and cut all the leaves off
and spray with dormant oil. Most of what I am growing are HTs and
they seem to like this regimen.
