[SANS] Seeds, etc

Thank you Norma, I know people around here have a Mesa Gardens catalogue,
so I will have a look at it. As Lyn says, importing plants is very
difficult for us - and not only for us. I saw a note from Whitestone
Gardens in the UK recently which said "Plant exports outside the European
Community are no longer possible because of draconian charges for CITES and
health certificates, and a system so complex that even a genius cannot
crack it". Seed importation is a bit easier, although we recently had a bit
of a hassle because a member of our Society had some Euphorbia seeds
confiscated (and if I remember rightly the same thing happened to Lyn at
one stage). We think we have solved the problem for that member. I was
interested, Sue, that you send lots of seeds to us. I have just returned
from our monthly Branch meeting, where we had 51 people present, and a very
good presentation on Notocactus from a 14 year old lad. We have a lot of
very keen growers of cacti and other succulents, and despite all the
difficulties we are managing to get new species. However, Sansevierias do
NOT seem to be the flavour of the month. But we will do our best to foster
these plants. I think there is a misconception that they are "house plants"
(eg the laurentii types) and there is nothing outside that. Perhaps someone
should write an article for our national journal on the subject, to get
people interested. But on another topic altogether, the Verrity clan (me
and him) got 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Pachypodium competition!

Regards to all

Frances (oh, by the way Lyn, I just heard the weather forecast for
Invercargill - I hope you have your woollies on!)
