Dear Diane,
I have accepted the responsibility as listowner.
I have also suggested we put all the bickering in the past. Its time to
move along. Why do you insist upon making false accusations and untrue
claims? You keep alluding to how my postings come across but exactly how do
you think you are coming across?
I've never said mine was the only point of view that was correct nor have I
made any statement that was not backed up without documentation. Most often
the conclusions I have reported were of others and not mine. I welcome
other points of view, I just prefer them to be well thought out and backed
with facts.
I have gotten a number of plants from the original collectors and even have
been propagating a hybrid of my own making. The supply is very limited and
I cannot make plants widely available. I would prefer to make them
available to those who can propagate them commercially. I never simply mail
order. I prefer to see what I am buying. I have seen Bob Smoley's
collection and many others first hand. Many of my plants have also been
gifts or trades.
I said that the subject of growing plants may not interest me personally
because Sansevierias are typically undemanding but others are free to
discuss that topic or any other. Growers don't stay newcomers very long.
Why limit this to be a beginner's forum. There is so much more to talk
about.
Juan's personal attacks upon me in the forum have been polite? It is nice
that he "admits that he is learning something new about Sansevierias every
day" but it would have been even nicer if he could have shared it with the
rest of us. We still don't have any proof that Sans. 'Koko' has been
reported wild from Kenya or if it is actually a garden hybrid found in
Hawaii after all.
Juan has underplayed the contribution that David Grigsby has made to
growing Sansevierias. The few times I met Dave, he was willing to freely
share what he knew about plants. I wish to keep that tradition going in
this forum. That is the best way to get the word out. I have given out
information freely in this and other forums. It is a shame that some do not
appreciate that.
I have never claimed to be an "expert". I am just a dedicated student of
the genus. I may be much better versed in the literature than most but that
is in addition to what I already know about growing the plants. I freely
share what I know, as I have already explained. If you claim I have never
set foot in an herbarium or never done any actual research you may be in
for a surprise. I frequent many area research facilities and am well known
there, much to my surprise and frequently discuss nomenclatural and
botanical problems with several botanists at the Smithsonian and other
facilities. I just do not like to talk about myself.
You may be quite surprised to find out the actual backgrounds of the
majority of well known "experts" in the study of succulents and other
plants. They are not all professional botanists. There are just not enough
jobs in botany to go around. Juan is not a professional botanist either.
But so what?
Diane, are you volunteering to finance field trips to Africa and India as
well as pay air fair for a trip to the Huntington? I only wish I had your
resources.
Yes, these archives are freely available to the public but are yours? I
have always wondered the intent of secret societies. 25 people have great
expectations of you, just don't let them down. They are always welcome
here.

Stephen:
Maybe you don't realize how you come across on this list and every other
one you have belonged too. YOUR opinion is the only right one and you
argue against anyone who suggests otherwise.
As soon as I get the final okay from Hermine, the list is all yours. You
have yet to say where you got your botanical degrees from that make you
such an "expert"? Just quoting from books or magazines doesn't make anyone
an expert about anything in my opinion. I noticed that Juan mentioned
several days ago that in order to be an expert, you really need to have
done field work in addition to studying herbarium specimens and reading
books! I second that idea completely.
Juan may disagree with someone but he puts it in such a polite way that
most don't take offense. He also admits that he is learning something new
about Sansevierias every day.
You've already made it clear to me privately that your sansevierias are so
rare that you don't dare mention what you even have on the list. I can
only assume that you simply mail order them like everyone else. You also
said that discussing culture is boring. However, that is PRECISELY what
newcomers need to know!
We already have 25 on the other list without any advertising other than
right here. You are the first person in 2 years of running email lists
that I have decided to bar from a list. I bid this list goodbye at this
time. The archives are always available if I choose to review what is
being discussed here.
