Hi Everyone!
I hope you are all having a pleasant holiday.
Steve asks about timing of flowers on Sansevierias. I actually kept a
record once for our Sansevieria Robin. Unfortunately I cannot lay my hands
on it at present. Need to do some filing!
At present we have forskaoliana and masoniana 'Giant Form' just going out
of flower. This year I noticed the flower tube on forskaoliana is
definately pink. Quite noticeable. Not all the clones are the same however.
Some are not pink at all. We have collected several times in Yemen over the
years.
We have a suffruticosa just budding up and the parvas have also just
started. In general I find humbertiana is the first to flower. Usually
about now (late this year). The parvas, dooneri, and that group flower in
the Spring, and the vast majority of species flower in the Summer.
I am about to go through the collection cleaning, so this was a good time
to see what has flowered this year (some have also set seed):
aethiopica, aubrytiana, subspicata, grandis, humbertiana, parva, parva
'Gilt Edge', dooneri, sp.Lake Sibaya, senegambica 'Striated', 'Fernwood',
phillipsiae, sp.Lav.5949 (spoon-leaf), hyacinthoides, schweinfurthii,
dawei, scabrifolia, conspicua, fasciata
As regards scent, I think they are all different. If they flower in winter,
I find the scent is very little, but when the weather is warmer they have a
much stronger scent. The majority are something like hyacinths, but those
with darker flowers, such as phillipsiae, suffruticosa, pearsonii, etc have
a scent which is almost chocolatey. It would be worth sniffing around and
making a record. I also collect Stapeliads, so sniffing Sansevierias would
make a welcome change!
All the best from a wet and windy England
Alan
