Rousseau and Sansevierias

Dear Narda,

Oh, don't get me started about Rousseau. I understand he is trying to show a
Utopia where everyone and everything gets along. A romantic notion but a bit
unrealistic. Its bad enough he had animals together from different parts of
the world playing together that would otherwise be predator and prey. He
also has them sitting in fields with garden plant that are not found in the
wild, including variegated Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii'. In reality,
Rousseau never left Paris and drew the animals he saw at the zoo and plants
from the botanical garden. Hardly a Utopia.

You do get the distinct feeling that he particularly liked Sansevierias. I
wonder how many of his paintings include Sansevierias.

His pictures remind me of a mural in the Smithsonian that has dinosaurs and
plants including Magnolia x soulangeana, a garden hybrid. (This was painted
long before the movie Jurassic Park came out.)

Those kind of anachronisms make me chuckle. But that's just my opinion.
Maybe I'm just too close to the subject.

Thank you Steve, you are very nice. I have about twenty different types of
Sans and none of them are labeled. They do very well for me, I find them
interesting in terms of the forms and also you see them in the paintings of
one of my favorite artists, Henri Rousseau. I use plants in my classroom
for
my students to draw in still life studies. I can be patient about this so I
don't have to burden anyone with my questions. I do plan to add to my
collection. Fortunately one of my best friends who is a hosta hybridize
also
collects Sansevierias, he is very helpful. A real bonus is Glasshouse, just
two hours from here and will visit as soon as the hosta gardens near there
are open for business.

Again thank you,
Narda
