'Loop's Pride' is one of the problem children of the Sansevieria clan. '
Manolin' is another. I find that most of their troublesome nature can be
solved by keeping them warm in winter. The S. trifasciata hahnii cultivars
do not handle cold weather, especially when wet. They only like greenhouses
that are kept especially warm in winter. What they really like are cozy
homes. They're "people plants". I can see the difference if I grow them in
a room I tend to live in versus a cooler back room where I have a lot of my
other Sansevierias. As was already pointed out they do very well grown
under lights in a light garden.
I suspect some of the problems people are having is that they are growing
them up against cold winter windows, or in greenhouses. Now the ideal
environment for them would be with some bottom heat and a closely set
flourescent light overhead. I have this fantasy of building a rack to fit
over the top of my computer monitor and then suspend a circline flourescent
on a timer overhead. There I could grow my small collection of S. t. hahnii
cultivars to perfection. I would strongly recommend a large tray to catch
any water plus moving the plants to the kitchen counter for watering to
prevent any chance of moisture getting into the monitor. And, alas, for
this possiblity I think my fantasy will remain a fantasy.
Interestingly when leaves of S. t. 'Loop's pride' are put down they produce
another variety similar to plain old S. t. hahnii but with smaller thicker
leaves. I understand this variety is called S. t. 'malachite', which itself
will come true from leaves.
