Re: Chahinian #15

Dear Faye,

Sansevieria Chahinian #15 is the same as HBG 71771. I thought it might be a
collection of Sansevieria aethiopica that Juan found in Zimbabwe but only he
knows for sure.

The color of the scales on the rhizomes is a red (or is that purple)
herring. That is not a feature unique to any one species.

*****************

There is no doubt that the name Sansevieria sulcata Bojer is a nomenclatural
synonym of Sansevieria canaliculata Carriere and should be discarded. The
plant seen in the trade to which the name Sansevieria sulcata is misapplied
is actually Sansevieria bacularis Pfennig.

The two species are very easy to tell apart.

Sans.canaliculata: leaves smooth, unbanded, deeply grooved on the sides.

Sans.bacularis: leaves rough, banded, not grooved on the sides.

The two species were discussed in detail some time ago and the info is in
the Mallorn archives.

Hi all,
I was just checking my plants under fluorescents and noticed that one I
got last fall from the Huntington sale has three new stolons coming from the
base of the plant.
This is a small statured one with narrow leaves marked Chahinian #15. The
stolons have a wonderful purple colored sheath at the base.
Any info on this one would be greatly appreciated. It looks like it
will be very vigorous, which is nice as this one was touch and go when I
first got it. It wanted to yellow and die back and only the fact that I put
it under lights with a fan circulating the air seemed to save it.
I don't see a reference to it in the Sansevieria Journals, but perhaps
I've overlooked it, if so, can someone point it out?
Anyway, this is an interesting little plant!
