Dear Juan,
All I have been able to find is the mention in Grigsby Cactus Gardens 1983
Wish Book on page 14.
"Sansevieria bacularis - Apparently the name "sulcata" should be sunk into
S.canaliculata. What we have called "sulcata" becomes S.bacularis. All this
per Pfennig. However, we do not find "bacularis" is published. Regardless,
this tall, wonderful species is remarkable."
The following year, in their 1984 Wish Book on pages 16-17, it is listed
again with their Grigsby collection number and also as a variegated
cultivar.
"Sansevieria bacularis (sulcata) GC78036 Rounded lvs. with a small channel.
grows to 5'
Sansevieria bacularis variegate GC 83034 Gold and green lines stretch the
length of the leaf. Once the faint lines of beginning color are seen it
takes up to two years for the full color to come. But it always does."
It would appear that Horst Pfennig intended to validly name this species but
never got around to it.
It would be interesting to find out if his manuscript is still in the
Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden. He worked together with Dr. Edith Raadts,
the authority on African Kalanchoe, and I believe she is still there.

Yes, I meant "Baculum" as the Latin root word. "Balulum" was a typo.

Steve,
Since you are a library worm (well meant), have you ever found anything in
writing from Pfennig about S. bacularis, or is it only word of mouth?
Thanks
Juan
