Sans.arborescens and Sans.bagamoyensis

Dear Juan,

The problem is that Sansevieria arborescens Cornu in Gerome & Labroy (1903)
and Sansevieria bagamoyensis N.E. Brown (1913) are both based on collections
made by Sacleaux in Tanzania which are the narrow leafed plant. Then
Sansevieria arborescens Cornu is the correct name for the narrow leafed
plants in cultivation.

If Sansevieria arborescens sensu N.E. Brown (1915) is actually based on
broad leafed plants from near Mombasa, Kenya which he cites, then Brown
misapplied the name and what he described is something other that what was
originally described as that species and probably synonymous with the
unnamed form in cultivation from southern Somalia.

Brown, N.E. (1915) Sansevieria. A Monograph of All Known Species. Kew
Bulletin 1915 (5): 185-261, 23 figs.

Gerome, J. & Labroy, O. (1903) Sur La Collection De Sansevieria Des Serres
Du Museum; Tableau Synoptique Des Especes Et Notes Sur Leur Multiplication.
Bull. Mus. Hist. Nat. Paris 9: 167-177. (English translation in The
Sansevieria Journal 1 (4): 59-66 (1992))

The plant that Powys (1996) (Sans. Journ. 5 (1): 3, fig. 1) saw on Kiwaiyu
Island appears to be yet another report of it >>

Steve,
I said that Lav 24534 is in all probability S. robusta (definitely NOT
powellii)
and that the confusion may have arisen from the fact that Lavranos sent
ANOTHER plant with the note "aff. powellii". This is in fact Lav 23251,
which
has shorter and thicker (never said wider) leaves than S. arborescens. The
plant from Kiwayu Island could be it.
S. arborescens has WIDE leaves per N.E.Brown, as attested by a collection I
made near Mombassa, Kenya. S. bagamoyensis has NARROW per N.E. Brown.
In cultivation the names are erroneously applied.
Juan
