I think he says he leaves most of the rhizome to go with the new division,
amputating close to the parent. if at all possible, and there is
substantial length of rhizome, i cut in the middle. sometimes those cuts
die back to the parent anyway...life is full of horrid chances!

PS a new New Zealander snuck in today and needs to introduce him/herself to
us, complete with biography as it pertains to collecting these plants, plus
other tasty tidbits.  like do you drink Bovril from the jar?
