Re: [SANS] Various (Sansevieria questions)

In response to Alan's long unanswered questions:

1. "Trifasciata" is Latin for "three banded" How the species epithet
applies to the Sansevieria is unclear. I wouldn't expect some deeper
meaning in it. Sometimes a name is just a name.

2. Juan has pointed out in his book and various articles that leaf cuttings
from variegated plants can sometimes be induced to produce variegated
plants.

3. Sansevieria ehrenbergii is the northern species from the Arabian
peninsula, Somalia, Sudan, Djibouti and Ethiopia.

Sanseveria robusta is the larger growing species from Kenya.

Sanseveria perrotii (Sans. zanzibarica) is a slender species, more like
typical Sans. ehrenbergii, from Tanzania and possibly also southern Kenya.
There are photos of what may be Sans. perrotii (as Sans. ehrenbergii) from
Wambas Pass, southern Kenya in LaFon, R. & Schwartz, H. (1989) IN KENYA.

The dwarf species from eastern Somalia, often confused with Sans.
ehrenbergii and Sans. robusta, is actually Sans. rorida. (ISI 95-42
(Lavranos 23328A), ISI 96-57 (Lavranos 23154) & ISI 97-86 (Lavranos 23395)
are all this species.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I am giving lectures on Sansevierias now to local branches, a few
questions have come up on which I would welcome comment:

1. Why S.trifasciata? "trifasciata" means three-faces I think.

2. I say you can't get a variegated plant from a leaf cutting, but several
people say they have done it even with 'Manolin'
Any experience with S.kirkii 'Coppertone'?

3. The perennial question of the two S.ehrenbergii - from Arabia and from
Kenya. Can we call the Kenyan one S.robusta? and solve the problem?

Regards from a cloudy but steamy South of England
