Stephen:
I have made the decision, somewhat reluctantly, to give you a FINAL chance
to act like a gentleman. You must follow these common rules of courtesy in
order to be allowed to remain on the list:
1. No private postings of a harrassing type to any other list member. If
even one member sends me an email of this nature from you, you will be
removed with no further warnings.
2. If you disagree with someone's statement, Remember the rule my mother
taught me: "If you can't say anything good, say nothing at all!"
3. Remember, we can never have total agreement on any horticultural or
botanical matters because the taxonimists do make name change/revisions.
No one person on this list has the FINAL say on what a name should be. The
name used for all species/cultivars should be the most recently published
and generally accepted scientific name--at least this is what my
horticulture instructors taught my classes!
4. No cute remarks that may be easily misunderstood by others.
Unfortunately, jokes too often result in flame wars in email groups!
5. If you, or anyone else on this list, has a question about the
appropriateness of a posting, please send a proposed copy to Hermine and
myself BEFORE sending it on to the list.
I hope stating these rules, which will be applied not just to Stephen, but
to everyone, will eliminate much of the conflict of the last month or
more. If you prefer NOT to read discussions of appropriate names for
plants, please join the sansevieriasashobby list at onelist.com where the
atmosphere is more relaxed and more about enjoying plants instead of coming
up with scientific names and formal explanations for everything. There is
a place in the world for those with the scientific bent just as for those
of us who are more interested in growing a plant well, not just in learning
what the exact species name is or having the biggest collection.
Some interesting statistics:
We have 68 members. These are the total number of subscribers posting to
the list for the past few months:
July 23
June 19
May 15
April 6
March 12
February 5
January 13
I hope I didn't count anyone twice because they changed their handle.
Now, so everyone will understand where I am coming from. I refer to myself
more as a hobbyist BUT I like to have the exact name too. Most discussions
about differences in inflorescences, etc. go right over my head even with
my horticulture degree. I view that as the realm of the
botanist/taxonimist and wouldn't consider trying to tell them how to do
their job. My goal in life is to help others learn to grow plants (not
just Sansevierias) well!
My credentials (for those who are wondering--I have a feeling you will be,
Stephen): BA in Social Science for Secondary Education, MA in Adult and
Continuing Education, Certificate in word processing (so I can eat!),
Master of Labor and Industrial Relations, and just recently, Associate in
Horticulture. Disability keeps me from the high pressure jobs I am well
qualified for; plants are my therapy against chronic pain and depression.
If I had my ideal job, it would be that of a horticulture therapist or
garden writer (which I am doing on the internet at suite101). In the
meantime, I happily scrub floors, clean displays, put out stock, prune
plants all for the privilege of teaching a few customers how to enjoy
plants in their homes.
Let peace reign on this list from henceforth!
