Sansevieria 'Horwood'

Dear Aneita,

I had originally intended a posting about Sanseviera 'Horwood' but also
came realized that this was not the collection Jeff was describing. But now
that the invalid name "Sansevieria horwoodii" has once again appeared in
the forum, some clarification may be needed.

It is awful that these things always happen when Juan is out of the
country.

not Hepper & Wood (1983)

This species described from Somalia differs from the closely allied
S.forskaoliana by having leaves smooth on the upper surface and the lower
side smooth to somewhat roughened, particularly on the older leaves. This
species occurs along the coast of southern Somalia into eastern Kenya. It
was included in the synonymy of S.forskaoliana by Thulin (1995) and Teketay
(1995) but that species ocurs further inland and has leaves strongly rugose
on both sides.

The Frank Horwood collection known as 'FKH 424' is without locality data
but believed to be from Kenya. It was given the cultivar name 'Horwood' by
David Grigsby and appears to be referrable here. Identical plants were
collected 10 km northwest of Kibwezi on the Nairobi-Mombasa road by Juan
Chahinian in 1992. The name Sansevieria horwoodii has become widespread in
the horticultural trade but has never been formally published.

Dear Jeff;

There is a Sansevieria horwoodii (FKH 424) pictured in the Abbey Gardens
Cactus and Succulent Catalog. I am also growing it. It's small and very
slow growing. I'm sort of a newbie to the more rare Sansevierias. Maybe
they got the number wrong? Hmmm read your post again. I don't think they
are the same plant. But there is a picture on page 24 in the 1995 catalog
of
my horwoodii.
