There are many "ordinary" sansevierias used as office plants in New
Zealand, what are usually called Mother in Law's tongue. My mother in law
certainly had one of those! The reason they are offered for this purpose is
that they will tolerate low, artificial light. Mind you, if you live in the
centre of Auckland at the moment you probably haven't got any light at all,
as all their power cables have failed. But one of the advantages of living
in Wellington, or Invercargill, where our other New Zealander lives, is
that we don't have such problems. If you are confused about these names,
look in your atlas! You will then notice that Wellington is at the bottom
of the North Island, and Invercargill is at the bottom of the South Island.
Hopefully one day Lyn from Invercargill will tell you all about her
problems growing Sans and other succulent plants in what is, essentially, a
sub-antarctic climate (don't attack me Lyn!!!!)
