I get the message Frances.
Hi everyone, I am one of the 40 something of the Sansevieria subscribers,
and have been enjoying your chats for 2 or 3 months now.
My name is Lyn Evans, I live in what is loosely termed the Far South in the
Deep South, known to most as Invercargill, New Zealand.
I have a modest collection of Sansevierias namely: S.gracilis, S trifasciata
hahnii, S trifasciata, and from seed I have grown S dawei, S grandicuspis, S
Mason Congo, S patens, S FKH 424, S Liberica.
I also have a rather large plant of the old favorite S trifasciata
'laurentii' which has flowered several times over the last 5 or 6 years.
My growing situation is not with any great heat (or excess water), so my
plants grow rather slowly, but I have not lost any through rot or the cold.
There situation is in a hall which has a completely glass wall facing the
east (sun until midday) with a 'leg' facing north (with sun until about
3pm)the sun does not actually reach the plants, so they are really in a
bright light situation.
In the winter when we can get several -8 deg C frosts they do have the added
heat from a 'night store' heater which gives off gentle heat during the day.
They appear to be quite happy here and I daren't shift them.
Sansevierias are a rarity in our Garden shops, so I have managed to add to
my collection by importing seed, I mentioned this in an edition of The
Amateurs Digest and a kind lady from California sent me some seed. It is
almost impossible to import plants or cuttings into this country as
regulations are very 'tough' and to quarantine plants is very costly. So I
will continue to watch the seed catalogues for my favorites.
I also grow cacti and some caudiciforms in a couple of unheated glasshouses
with some success.
Good growing
Lyn.
