HI all,
I am commenting on the various excellent reports
from Steve.
I do not know the spelling given in Rauh's book but the
correct one for the plant is:
Sansevieria sambiranensis Perrier. (from Sambirano).
Rauh asked me if I have the plant (I do not) forgetting that I had asked him
before if he or someone he knew could get it from Madagascar. Apparently no one
has seen it again.
To add to Steve's comments, the flowers are
red.
I guess that the book is out now, it will help dissipate the
idea that Sansevieria canaliculata Carrière is a dwarf one. The
photo is from the Madagascar room in the Heidelberg University and I have seen
it twice and brought cuttings from there. The field picture, taken by Rauh,
shows a normal size plant as well.
It is suspected to have been introduced by the
Arabs a couple of centuries ago. However the French taxonomists deem that a
change has developed and call the plant Sansevieria canaliculata
var.malgache.(Malgache meaning Madagascan in French).
