The Genus Sansevieria

Dear All;
The recent queries about S pearsonii, S. gracilis and others all
point to the present sad state of affairs: there simply is not a recent
review / revision of the entire genus. The most recent being Brown's much
out of date monograph.

There are many reason's for this: wide distribution of species
covering most of Africa and various parts of southern Asia.
Difficulty of collecting and making hebarium sheets of mature
specimens.
Wide variability in some species that are vexing problems in
themselves (including variation between juvenile forms and adult foliage)
Political instabilities and environmental challenges making
specific collections very difficult.
        and many others.

Seems like one of the things we -as the closest thing to an
organized group of Sansevieria-philes- might do is locate and encourage
($$$$) a scientific review of this our favorite genus. To do this we might
need to:
        1. Locate any current field or museum study of this genus
        2. Locate any other current research and researcher in this genus
        3. Review all current research/ researchers and select someone who
might undertake a study.
        4. Raise money to aid that researcher in determining the
feasibility of a undertaking a full mongrpahic study of the entire genus.

Preferably this study would question all the undescribed (?)
material in cultivation, genetic affiinities and much more.

I think we can have some 'power' if we band together- anyone
willing to start the search?

        Best Jim W.
