Re: Cites and collection #'s

Dear Tom,

No species of Sansevieria are currently listed under CITES appendices I, II
or III. A few species, such as Sans.eilensis Chahinian, could be eligible
for listing though.

Here is the link to the CITES homepage.

Collector's numbers typically apply to documented wild collected plants.
Variegates usually appear spontaneously in cultivation and would not have
collector's numbers. If you are referring to grower's acquisition numbers,
those would be assigned at the discretion of the grower. Every grower can
have their own code or numbering system for keeping track of their plants.
New variegates and reversions that appear should be separately numbered or
named by the grower if kept as a separate clone. Hopefully one would not
rename a cultivar that has already been named.

As has been pointed out in the forum, the same variegated cultivar (or
reversion) can appear spontaneously over and over and would be given the
same cultivar name originally coined for resulting sport (or reversion) and
not the one given to the plant from which it originated. For example, if a
plant of Sans.trifasciata 'Moonshine' produced a sport resembling
Sans.trifasciata 'Robusta', the sport would still be named 'Robusta'
regardless of how many times it appears independently in different people's
collections or whether it originated from offsets or leaf cuttings.

Hey all,
Can anybody tell me if any Sansevierias are protected under Cites at
this time?

How about those collection #'s. Does a plant hold its collection # if
it is propogated from a leaf cutting or only from a rhizome? What if
you had a S.t. laurentii with a collection # and took a leaf cut and
propogated and ended up with a trifasciata. Would the collection #
hold?

Have a good one,
Tom
