This internship is available immediately through November 2002 as part of Brooklyn GreenBridge, the community horticulture program of Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  The internship will be part of our community outreach efforts to intensify the development of gardening projects in all parts of Brooklyn.  This internship will concentrate on working with people with special needs and their therapists across Brooklyn, with an emphasis on programs for children and youth.  It will include work with special education schools, nursing homes, mental health programs, and homeless shelters.  The intern will also have some general responsibilities for community horticulture education for children, youth, and adults.

Examples of responsibilities:
1.      Provide support and assistance for a GreenBridge network of therapists at social service institutions in Brooklyn seeking to develop and expand therapeutic horticulture programs.

2.      Plan and implement gardening projects and workshops with particular emphasis on serving people with disabilities and special needs.

3.      Participate in GreenBridge team of staff and volunteers in various community horticulture programs. Work with the Director of Brooklyn GreenBridge and Manager of Community Horticulture to implement programs for Brooklyn GreenBridge registered community gardens.

Note:  These responsibilities will require some evening and weekend work.

Qualifications:
*       The intern must have experience and/or training in horticulture; at least two years of college preferred. 
*       Must be considering horticulture as a vocation and have particular interest/training in horticulture therapy.
*       Prior work experiences in education, horticulture, or social services a plus.
*       Living experience in an urban setting helpful.  Must be able to meet the challenges of urban gardening.
*       Strong interpersonal skills. Able to work alone or in a team.
*       Good public speaking and communication skills.  Ability to converse with a variety of constituencies.
*       Bi-lingual helpful (Spanish and English).
*       Computer skills helpful.
*       Drivers license necessary.

A stipend is available. Although housing is not provided, suggestions for locating accommodations in NYC neighborhoods are available.
