CHILDREN AND THE ENVIRONMENT

**Candidates Can, and Should, Say More on Children and the Environment
The Children's Environmental Health Network and others have called on
every major Presidential candidate to address the too-often overlooked
link between children's health and the environment, especially the impacts
of environmental hazards on the ability to learn and develop into productive adults.

**Funding for Environmental Justice Programs
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences recently issued a
request for proposals for an environmental justice research program. The
program connects community members who are directly affected by adverse
environmental conditions with research scientists and community health
care providers to develop research strategies to address environmental
health problems. Deadline: August 18, 2000.

**The Future of Pesticides in U.S. Agriculture
The U.S. government should play a larger role in encouraging the
development and use of alternative pesticides or new low-risk chemical
pesticides that are not too costly for farmers, says a new National
Research Council report.
