Here is another interesting opportunity - these award nominations could be
a great way to honor the work being done with the teachers with whom you work.

CALL FOR TOP TEACHER NOMINATIONS
2001 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics
and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Applications Now Being Accepted
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces it is accepting
applications for the 2001 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics
and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The program, which honors outstanding
science and mathematics teachers for kindergarten through grade 12, is the
highest award the nation presents to these teaching professionals.
Teachers must submit their application by February 12, 2001. A panel of
expert judges select up to four National Awardees from each state, the
District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the U.S. Department of Defense
schools in four categories - elementary mathematics, elementary science,
secondary mathematics, and secondary science.
State Finalists receive $750 and state-level recognition. National
Awardees receive an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to accept the
Presidential Award, meet with leading scientists and mathematicians, and
have an opportunity to participate in field experiences, such as visits to
NASA and the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, National Awardees
receive a $7,500 NSF grant.
Educators, parents, and students may nominate and encourage outstanding
teachers to apply; teacher applicants must complete the application form.
For additional information regarding the PAEMST program, or for the
application form, please contact the National Science Foundation at (703)
292-5096 or visit the Web site at http://www.nsf.gov/pa. The PAEMST
receives support from many of the nation's businesses and non-profit
organizations.
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
(PAEMST) Program was established in 1983 by The White House and is
administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program
recognizes outstanding science and mathematics teachers, kindergarten
through 12th grade, in each state, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the
following U.S. Territories as a group-American Samoa, Guam, The
Commonwealth of the Northern Marinas, and the Virgin Islands- and the
schools of the Department of Defense Education Activity, both in the United
States and abroad. These teachers serve as models for their colleagues and
are leaders in the improvement of science and mathematics education. Since
1983 more than 3,000 teachers have been selected to enter the network of
Presidential Awardees. They represent a premier group of science and
mathematics teachers and provide the nation with an impressive array of
expertise to help improve teaching and learning while becoming more deeply
involved in activities such as curriculum development, research, and
teaching other teachers. While most
remain in the classroom, some have become school principals, supervisors,
superintendents, and college faculty.
