But the real significance of the place for me, and my sadness at its
destruction, is that it was the location of a great deal of energetic and
high-spirited work and play for the hundreds of 11 and 12 year old students
who built the garden at King over the past five years.

David --
This is the heart of the tragedy -- the disillusionment and lack of value
placed on the positive contributions that young people can and do make to our
communities.  My deepest sympathies to all whose work has been destroyed. Any
follow up to this -- public outcry?  apology???

It is a lesson (albeit painful) that no matter how successful a project is,
it is subject to the decisions of those in more powerful positions.  Getting
a project noticed is not enough; creating the political clout to prevent the
destruction is also necessary.  I am astonished that this project has been
degraded in this way; as you said it is too late, but surely there were other
solutions that would have left it intact and met the access needs the new
road is to serve.
