NEW WATERSHED SCIENCE MANUAL FOR EDUCATORS FROM CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

Water is an issue no matter where you go in the world.  Everyone needs water to survive and everyone, everywhere lives in a watershed.

Watershed Science for Educators was written for high school and middle school teachers and students. The information contained in the 213-page packet will help them easily incorporate the study of watersheds into science classes and into after-school science clubs.

According to the authors, Karen Edelstein, Nancy Trautmann and Marianne Krasny, "Monitoring a watershed helps students see connections between human actions and their environment.  Monitoring is the first step toward discovering solutions to problems."

The section on land-use changes observed from aerial photographs provided in the packet is an incredible eye-opener to students as they see the differences between land use in 1938 and in 1980.

Activities such as calculating discharge, sampling aquatic invertebrate life, calculating a biotic index for stream organisms, using a dissolved oxygen nomograph, using topographical maps, as well a physical monitoring such as measuring stream depth and velocity are described in detail.

Instructions for sampling water at a study site and blank, copyable, data sheets make using this packet, or parts of it, easy for the teacher and fun for the student.

This packet includes teachers' pages with objectives, preparation suggestions and examples of pertinent questions.  Background information gives the educator a foundation for each topic.  Student activity pages and worksheets help the educator direct the lesson. Appendixes provide information on resources that support the activities.
