Re: [sg] How do I get started?

Laura --

What a great series of links!   I was not sure what age level Rhonda was aiming at; I saw a FANTASTIC project presented by a HS AP class at the SE Flower show one year --- they did a Shakespeare Garden booth and built a garden ; all plants were labeled with quotes and they had a book produced summarizing the quotes as well as discussion of the meaning of the quotes in their context.

WIth gifted education, you can extend the research component very well.  I have found that garden based education is a way to reach many levels of students in a mixed ability group because the range of strengths in the students can be met well in education that is both basic and advanced in its content.

Starting points:

The links Laura listed are GREAT!  Also, the American Horticultural Society has a Youth Gardening Symposium every year that moves around the country.  NY 4-H has many good pubs. on garden education in general and urban gardening in particular .  4-H also has a very nice demo garden at Michigan state (see link)

In Georgia there's the Environmental Education Alliance site that is very informative and has many helpful links too. They are also compiling lesson plans that you can access on line.  http://www.eealliance.org/

Barnett Shoals Elementary is an example of a school that started with zero dollars, had a vision led by teachers and parents that was translated into a master plan.  Money was raised and the plan is about "built out" after 12 years. The next phase is further curriculum development and renewed volunteer and teacher support.  Click on the G.R.O.W. button on top of the school page to find the info.
