National Wildlife Federation On-line Workshop
Keep the Wild Alive* : Endangered Species / Endangered Habitats
October 4 - November 12, 1999

Workshop Description
Designed for formal and informal educators, this Keep the Wild Alive* Online
Workshop will explore the topic of endangered species. Teachers will
actively engage
in six weeks of online activities, discussions with experts and peers,
research and
creating ideas to incorporate endangered species topics into formal and
informal
education curricula.
Weekly Topics
Week 1 -Diversity of Life
Scientists have classified over one million species, and estimate that
there are as
many as 30 million. Learn about endangered species globally and locally.
Week 2 -Threats to Species
One prominent biologist predicts that a current extinction crisis will
mark the 20th
century. Explore contributing factors, including habitat loss.
Week 3 -Exploring Places for Wildlife
Every organism in an ecosystem plays a role, from the tiger to the dwarf
wedge mussel.
Relate this to the unique features of your local ecosystem. Discuss
peoples' role sin
conserving habitat.
Week 4 -Fall Break/Planning Period
A week for completing independent research and gathering information.
Week 5 -Teaching Endangered Species
How do we integrate endangered species into the curriculum? How do we connect
students to nature and the environment? Discuss these questions and more.
Week 6 -Making a Place for Wildlife, Inside and Outside the Classroom
Share plans for an action project in your class, community, or home that
focuses on
endangered species, habitat conservation, or a host of other
environmentally-related
topics.
Technical Requirements
Basic familiarity with the Internet, and Internet access that
permits you to logon
several times a week.
Power Macintosh or 486 PC with at least 16MB of RAM
Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, Version 2.0 or
higher.
An active E-mail address.
Course Fees
Registration for workshop only - $90
Registration for workshop with 2 semester credits from Hamline University -
$240
(Note: a limited number of people may audit the course for $35. Auditors
can access expert discussions and limited activities only. See on-line
