Re: [OT] poison ivy?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

We have milk goats and I can attest that goats love the stuff. PI has
lots of sugar in the leaves. Ever notice how beautiful the leaves are in
the Fall. The more sugar in a plant's leaves, the prettier they are in
the fall. Goats love sugar. Fortunately, they are not allergic to PI.
With PI vines growing up a tree, sometimes the best approach is to cut it
with an axe or pruner (don't forget to wash the blade afterwards) and
leave it there to slowly decompose away. If you don't want the vine
hanging around, find someone who isn't allergic to it to pull it down and
immediately after pulling it down feed it to some hungry goats. Hungry
goats will eat more of the tough stems but even goats that are not hungry
can't resist the leaves. Just remember to not pet or handle the goats
for several days afterwards if you are particularly sensitive to PI since
they will have the oils on them.

We burn the woody vines that even a goat will not eat. Most people can't
do this because they don't have a place to burn PI that is hundreds of
feet from anything. We do. We just start the fire and walk off and
don't do near it until it has completely died down. I would not suggest
doing this, though, unless you can set the fire hundreds of feet away
from anything or anyone that might be affected. In the absence of such
conditions, I'm not sure how you would get rid of the stuff. Perhaps a
compost pile just for PI. You could plant ornamentals right on the
compost pile.

Goats are great for keeping PI at bay once you have a place cleared of
it. Unfortunately, they like to chew on lots of other things like
broccoli, honey suckle, clothing (especially if you're wearing it), etc.
