Basil & tomatoes spacing

My tomato/basil patch is 3' x 9' and I have put the tomatoes in 
"checkerboard" style, and will be plainting basil in the unused squares.  Not 
only will I have basil for my own use, but it is said to help the tomatoes 
grow better.....time will tell.  With sqft gardening method I can plan an 
interesting pattern in my garden like this, not just plop things in 
willynilly.  Matter of fact, I redesigned my whole vege garden "14' x 21') 
and have sqft beds of various sizes.  It made it easier to design such a 
large area.
