I haven't finsihed reading all my messages yet so maybe someone else
mentioned it- but to solve the problem of the height with the cages- I just
wired two together- But I used -I think it must have been hogwire?- the
kinds of wire you use in pastures( I found it on the side of the road so who
knows????) it had some 2X4 inch square and some bigger squares - that were
good for reaching in and picking toms.Iwired two 3 foot lengths together in
squares and then I did just what margaret said-cut the bottom off to shove
it into the ground- then used rebar to stabilize.I also grew a couple on my
trellis in my beds and they did well but I (dug deeper for this year) and
also I plunked two into 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled into the bottom
into the ground in a sunny spot and put cages over them.- They did REALLY
well. An old scandanavian neighbor turned me onto that- he said they like
their roots cool and their tops warm.Best tips I got were to add grass
clippings and espson salts every so often. - Strangest thing I found was
that we only had one tomato worm all last year. and that was at the end of
the season.I used NO pesticicides- I'm pretty new to veggie gardening-so
haven't got a clue why- but I was suprised.
