Well after rethinkng the whole thing- I am wonderdering if there is simply
not enough stuctural support. I had used the wooden frames - like upsed
down horseshoes and tired to do the same with the pipe. - a few inside
crossbars might give it some strength- also- I had attached it to my beds
and I think I should pound it down into the ground a foot and not try to
make it so high . I am going to try to before giving up the ghost. It's paid
for after all. and hearing a sucess story encourages me.After that -if it
doesn't work- I'll try the EMT pipe. Boy- it has turned chilly and windy all
of a sudden here in zone 9-Wish I had one of those hats they wear in
Minesota. All the goofs that set their plants out 2 weeks ago are
regretting it now. My Dad never sets anything but cold veggies out before
the end of April no matter WHAT the weather seems like. and he is usually
right. The extra week or two ahead that you get if things just happen to go
right simply isn't worth the crops you lose when they don't and most folks
are simply not prepared with cold frames and such out here in Sunny Northern
CA.I have stuff hardening off safe on the sunny/shady carport with lattice
and tarps at the ready in case it gets windy - but many things I will just
go buy at the specialty nursery. Not a big garden this year- Mostly focused
on redoing the yards and paths and fences -planted- with shrubs and
perinials-bulbs etc- which has been a big job. Total of 4 beds and some
scattered containers for veggies which is plenty for my daughter and
myself.Trying those scarlet runner beans in with the morning glories on a
western trellis against the house- .and maters plunked in various locations
around the yard as well as in the beds. Found a lemon armenian cuke that I
can't wait to try. And My favorite?PATTYPAN Squashes- Going to use
Margaret's excelent suggestion of using round tomato cages to prop the
floppy little buggers up- they do seems to like to sprawl.Have lots of
sunflowers and herbs and other bushes and flowers planted near my veggie
garden this year becasue last year nothing got pollinated near enough. Saved
a bunch of fucia Four o Clock Seeds- - from the other side of the yard where
Bumble bees and butterflies gathered like crazy- They can be started now
and set out in May and like sun or shade-bloom til Ocotber here.Beautiful
green foliage - about 2 1/2 feet high - zillions of flowers- If any one
wants some -Email me-I decided that lack of polination was NOT going to be
a reason for lack of veggies this year. It was my hardest lesson last
year-no bees no fruit- so now there is so much stuff planted that blooms it
is just silly!-Wonder what my hardest lesson for this year will
be..........teri
