On the organic gardening list, they've had several threads having to do 
with no-till. Several people who have tried it say that organic matter 
tilled into soil disappears in a year or two. But if you put organic matter 
on top of the soil and let soil microcreatures and creatures carry it 
downstairs, it tends to be a more permanent improvement of the soil. Please 
don't ask me to explain the logic of this. It's just one of those phenomena 
that seem to work. Were I to amend clay for the first or even second times, 
I'd till in organic matter. Then start laying compost on top, and let the 
soil critters do the work better than I can do it.

Also, I've heard one or two people say they killed Bermuda grass with an 
Epsom salts mixture.  I don't know the concentration they used or even 
whether their claims were truthful.  But it would be cheap to try it 
yourself...Margaret L
