My husband and I have just purchased a new home where
I plan to put in several raised sqft beds. The soil
is fairly heavy clay and is really in need of
amending. I have access to a city recycling center
that offers compost. I've used this compost before
for a perienial garden and seen no "significant"
damage done to the plants.
Recently, I became aware that compost made with grass
treated with herbicide could affect plant growth. I
do know that this compost comes from a wide area and
does contain collected grass clippings, and their
unknown chemicals.
The dilemma is that this compost is free, all I can
cart away (and I have a truck to borrow ready.) And,
I have 6 raised beds to amend. And...this is our
first house and money isn't free flowing.
Should I count on the fact that I didn't notice major
damage done before?
Should I worry about pesticides or other residual
chemicals, since I'm now using the compost on edibles?
I really love the information coming out of this forum
and would like to know how you would handle the
trade-offs.
