Hi Jay,

I recommend doing a search for "Scott and Helen
Nearing."  They were a couple of simple lifers during
the depression and most of the last century.  I
believe Helen died within the last ten years.  Anyway,
they were strict vegans and grew all of their own food
without the use of any animal products.  

They wrote several books about their style of life. 
You shouldn't have any trouble finding the
information.  There is at least one foundation that
preserves much of the information that they left for
us.
