Susie,

I've heard the same thing, and since I'm allergic to rubber, it's not even an option for me!  I'm planning on having my dh build a potato bin, basically I've envisioned a box, with 4x4 corner posts, with grooves routed down the length on two adjacent sides of each post.  Then, I'll slip a row of boards in, as the plant grows, and I have to hill up the dirt some more...  so my bin will get taller as the season progresses...

Yikes...this is the first time I've heard of this, all the advice I've received of potato planting from gardening sources is the tire method and I was kind of looking forward to it as it was contained. Any advice on another container and what does everyone else have to say about this??

>>>Susie, do NOT plant any food plants in old tires........they emit a chemical
that may get into the potatoes!
