My name is Stephanie and I live in hot West Texas. My mother-in-law and
I planted 1 4x4 square in early march containing lettuce, spinach, red
onions, 10-15 onions, sweet banana peppers, marigolds, nasturtiums, plus
two planters of potatoes. Everything has been sprouting/growing quite
nicely and we have been so excited with our "test square". This morning
we got up and discovered that something seems to be attacking the square.
It doesn't look like cutworms as described in Mel's book. It looks like
someone is eating out little holes in the leaves of our spinach, peppers,
potatoes, and nasturtiums, and like someone else (or maybe the same
creature) is taking a pair of scissors and cutting squares out of the
edges of the lettuce leaves. We are dangerously close to losing all
of our lettuce already (boy do they move fast) and are afraid of losing
the entire square. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Would it
be best to just apply 7-Dust to the whole square? Please Help as we
don't know what to do (this is our first gardening experience. We did
dig around one of our dying lettuce plants and find some teensy tiny
specks of gray with legs. Sorry I can't give a better description, but
they are almost to small to see, much less describe in detail. Could
these creatures be the culprit and does anyone know what they are and
what to do to get rid of them? PLEASE HELP!!!
Also, we looked in an Ortho book of gardening and pests and think it kind
of resembles the flea beetle. Has anyone any experience with this pest?
