I have found aphids can be controlled quite well with two things: a soap
spray (such as Safer's Soap), and yellow sticky traps.
Yellow sticky traps are merely yellow plastic cards coated with a sticky
substance. Insects are attracted to the color, land on it, then get stuck to
the surface. You can make your own with yellow plastic drinking cups, coated
with a thin layer of petroleum jelly ("Vaseline"). Set the cups amongst the
plants at about same height as foliage (I set the cups upside-down over top
of stakes). Vaseline (or even clean motor oil) will work as a coating, but
Tanglefoot (a coating specifically designed for stick-um type traps) works
much better. You can also cut yellow plastic picnic plates into squares,
coat them, then set among plants.
Had aphids all over roses last spring. I sprayed once with soap, then set
traps out. Never saw aphids again.
You can also try regular dish soap, 1-2 tsp per gallon, instead of an
insecticidal soap spray.
