Re: Soap & seedlings, gophers

Warning: soap is very detrimental to seedlings of the tomato/pepper family.
It can kill young ones and drastically reduces future yields on survivors. It
is usually good to wash it off after 20 min. on other plants. This includes
the EPA insecticidal soaps. Always use materials only at the strength
recommended on the label, please.
Gophers tend to be territorial. You only find "pods" when the young are with
mommy. They stake out about 1000 sq. ft per animal. If an animal is trapped
out, a neighbor may move into its territory. Worst problems are in rural
areas with hayfields or wild meadows. Trapping is definitely the best way to
go. The bombs, smokers, baits are not nearly as effective and are more
dangerous.
Hope this helps,
