Re: Fruit Flies


The brown/green thing is a valid issue and one I wish I understood more
clearly. However, it can't apply to James Good's original situation because
he's got a "worm bin" inside his house.  The fruit flies came into his bin
because he composted some citrus rinds that had larvae of the Mediterranean
fruit fly, the oriental fruit fly, or the Mexican fruit fly in them.  In the
normal course of the flies' life cycle, the larvae hatched and voila,
flitting adults.

Outdoors, where a virtually endless supply of insects could in fact be
seeking out a pile with certain brown/green characteristics, the info in
Heidi's post might be completely accurate.  But not indoors, in what amounts
to a closed system.

They need some "green" and "brown" stuff.  Fruit flies mean that you
probably have to many "green" things.  Also, remember to bury new items
inside the pile so the flies are not attracted to fresh scraps.
