Re: Tire containers, kids ,suggestions

In a message dated 97-04-19 03:37:09 EDT, you write:

<< I'm starting a school demonstration garden and would like to show tires as
containers. Any tips what I should do? ******Tires are DIRTY so make sure
you and the kids dress down. you could rinse out the inside with a garden
hose but its not necessary******
Do you paint them to prevent overheating?******Yes I do. I used exterior
latex ,beigh in color. I only painted the top as this gets really hot and
will burn leaves if left black, I do NOT paint the sides(tread side)******
And do you turn them inside-out to make a "bowl" type container? *****NO NO
NO leave the tire as is, fill it with dirt, making sure to shove the dirt
INTO the inside areas... be forwarned tires use ALOT of soil.BUT are perfect
containers... free, your recycling, free, they hold moisture really well,
free, and no hoeing and little weeding!!!******
I visited a great school garden where each child had their own tire
garden.***** that is such a SUPER idea, be sure to add one small strawberry
plant to each "plot" as while veggies are fun... strawberries are
heavenly.Try to get the local nurseries to donate ALL of your supplies. Let
them give the kids in your class a discount coupon for the parents, works
every time***
Let me know how this goes as I've done it myself for my sons class.
