Re: white bugs on my squashes, please help

Hi Joyce.

Indeed I agree with everyone else that you have whiteflies. They
are pesky, but I have dealt with them last year on my zucchini
by spraying an isopropanol-horticultural oil mix on top and under
neath the leaves. Isopropanol is common household rubbing alcohol
and it works by dehydrating the little buggers immediately. The
horticultural oil is to help the alcohol stick to the leaves long
enough to kill them without evaporating first. I would definitely
be sure to spray in the cool evening, as I think the alcohol and
hort oil can hurt the plants if it is too hot. I'm sorry as I'm
at work and don't have the recipe for the ratio of alcohol to oil
to water. Maybe someone else can help with the measurements?

I also used yellow cardboard stapled to paint stirring sticks.
The yellow cardboard was a free sample from a friend, and the
paint sticks are usually free at Home Depot, even if you don't
buy any paint... I stuck these in the ground around my veggies,
and then bought a small can of some sticky stuff for trees or
something (I forget the name, I think it was "Tangletrap"???),
and spread it on. It caught lots of other bad guys as well as
whiteflies, but never a lacewing or a ladybug. Good luck.
